For this part of the project I spent some time at Starbucks in Yardley, PA observing.
This Starbucks is set up with great open windows on one side of the restaurant with chairs and a counter for customers to sit and look out into the town. A few feet away from that is the registar and where the coffee is made. And to the other side of the counter is another seating area that is more closed off and not as bright.
What I found was that people ranging from all different ages entered this coffee shop. I found that the people who came to do work tended to sit on the side of the coffee shop that was more closed off and the people who came to socialize sat more towards the big windows watching the bustling town. Being here also made me realize how long people spend in Starbucks. Besides the people who just came in to pick up a quick coffee and leave, people stayed in the shop for hours.
Something else I noticed is that people definitely acted differently when it came to ordering or just dealing with people in general. Something I found interesting was that during this particular day, younger kids tended to be giggly and indecisive. They relied on their friends or parents to either order for them or choose what they wanted. Then, college kids or younger adults tended to be very outgoing and friendly. They had a good attitude and seemed genuinely polite when dealing with the workers and their peers. Last, adults seemed to be less friendly. Most seemed to have this "higher than thou" attitude when dealing with the workers, and when their orders were incorrect, they were really rude.
What this suggests to me about college life is that young adults having been away at college almost seem to have a more genuine and sincere attitude in life. This generation seems to be more accepting of all individuals and are way more sociable. This is something that I never exactly realized before doing this. Being at college and working around all different people seems to have broadened the horizons of young adults and allowed them to be more upbeat and accepting.
